Homework

Homework is an integral part of a student's learning and, in fifth grade, students will learn to balance long term assignments with daily tasks.  Vocabulary and Word Study homework will be assigned on alternating Mondays and due on Fridays.  Math homework will typically be assigned daily (check with your child's math teacher).

Routine Homework:

Vocabulary: Unit work is due every other Friday, quiz on Friday
Word Study:  Unit work is due every other Friday, quiz on Friday
Paragraph of the Week: nightly assignments are due every other Friday.
Booktalk:  (student chooses due date)
Math: Assigned Daily by Math Teacher

Special Assignments:

Book talks:  Students will be introduced to book talks early in the school year.  Book talks are ongoing and students are assigned one about every 6 weeks.

1. Your child should carefully fill out the written organizer found at this link. This can be typed or printed offline and handwritten. A reminder this must be turned in on the day of their book talk.

2. Your child will make a presentation during the school day to tell about the book. Click this link for the grading rubric.

For the presentation portion students should not read off of the organizer. This is just a tool to get them thinking about the book. They can feel free to be as creative with this presentation as they want as long as it contains a brief summary and description of characters, setting and problem (see the grading rubric). They should use notecards to help them remember what they plan to say.

Homework – Student Responsibilities (for grades 3-5):
(from the Westford Elementary School Handbook 2014-2015)
  • Homework is the student’s responsibility
  • Students are encouraged to use a homework assignment book or some
    organized method to record assignments
  • Students should make every effort to clarify homework assignments
    before leaving school
  • Students should complete homework assignments independently. Cooperative initiatives, however, can be beneficial when appropriate for instruction. If difficulties develop, a student should seek guidance from a teacher or parent
  • Students should complete homework assignments on time and according to teacher guidelines
  • Students are responsible for obtaining from their teachers any missed assignments
